Yeah, I was amazed. I kept expecting her to say, "Help us Obi-wan;
you're our only hope!"

ANd yes I'm being sarcastic. I thought it was idiotic at best. Why
didn't CNN use the money on that new gizmo and hire some actual
journalists??

I don't think they were real holograms. Holograms require a tube or a
device upon which an image is projected. These were just inserted
somehow during the broadcast, but the reporter doing the questioning
couldn't actually see the "hologram."

The term is being used to refer to the perspective of the viewer, not
the reporters. To viewers it simulated them being in the same room.

This has been done countless times. Like when cartoon characters show
up at the Academy Awards. When Elvis appears at the American Idol
ceremony. Calling this a hologram is an embarrassing gimmick for CNN.
That network has gone down hill since its early days. The only real
difference I can see is, in this case, you can see all the way around
the guy. But it's still not anything worth bragging about.

The camera-tracking technology is awesome, but I don't think the idea
worked very well as television. Viewers were paying more attention to
the so-called hologram than what the subject was saying. If you're
going to bust the convention where the anchor talks to a monitor, and
the subject talks back to the camera, then for God's sake don't do it
on election night. Let people get used to these fake holograms before
you "amaze" them.

Actually, election night seems to be a common time for news outlets to
show off their latest gimmicks. Back in the 50's or 60's, one of the
first Univac computers was used to tally the results and predict the
election. During he 1992 election I was working at a supercomputer
company, and our machine was used by one of the networks to produce
their 3-d graphics of the US map. And in 2000 or 2004 they showed off
HD technology, with commentators pointing to states on the wall-sized
screens.

News studios don't get too many big events that they can plan for months
in advance. Election night is their Super Bowl, so they pull out all
the stops.
